In addition, Clayton is home to a new Research and Training Zone (RTZ) that includes a Workforce Development Center, a collaborative effort between these industries, Johnston County, Johnston Community College and North Carolina State University. The center will provide skills training to benefit current as well as future employers in the area. The state-of-the-art Workforce Development Center opened its doors in August 2005.

In addition to industry, retail and service sectors are booming in Clayton. Along U.S. 70, a major thoroughfare, shopping and service centers are under construction.
